What Is the Advanced ECMO Certification Program?
The ECMO Certification is an intensive, six-month program that trains medical specialists to care for critically ill patients who need life support for their heart and/or lungs. The program combines several months of online theory with a week of in-person training at the International Hospital of Colombia. During the in-person training, our specialists performed clinical simulations and worked in real-life scenarios to learn how to operate the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) system. This advanced technology provides life support by temporarily doing the function of the heart and lungs in patients with severe cardiac or respiratory failure.
A team of critical care and cardiovascular surgery experts from the Cardiovascular Institute and the International Hospital of Colombia led this program. Moreover, these respected medical institutions are recognized throughout Latin America for their leadership and experience in ECMO. Throughout the certification, our specialists actively participated in identifying patients who need this type of life support, understanding contraindications, managing anticoagulation, monitoring treatment, and addressing complications associated with ECMO equipment. Thanks to this training, our Hospitals now offer a highly trained team and one of the most advanced treatments in intensive care medicine to our critically ill patients.

Our specialists attended the Advanced EMO Certification program in Bucaramanga, Colombia, hosted at the International Hospital of Colombia and the Cardiovascular Institute of Colombia. For five intensive days, our physicians participated in an in-person program that combined medical theory, clinical practice, and realistic patient simulations.
Throughout the week, they studied the different types of ECMO: Veno-Venous (VV-ECMO) and Veno-Arterial (VA-ECMO), and applied this knowledge to real clinical cases. Additionally, they also completed intervention training and practiced specialized procedures used in critical care settings. The certification program concluded with a final evaluation, followed by diplomas recognizing the expertise and commitment of our physicians in mastering this complex and life-saving technology.
