Echocardiogram in Puerto Vallarta

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart that creates real-time images of its structure and function, with no radiation or side effects.

What is an echocardiogram used for?

It detects faulty heart valves, cardiomyopathies, congenital defects, blood clots, and other structural abnormalities — often before obvious symptoms appear.

Types of echocardiogram we perform

Transthoracic

The most common type. Performed by placing a transducer on the chest.

Transesophageal

A transducer is passed through the esophagus for more detailed images of the valves and aorta. Requires 6 hours of fasting.

Stress/exercise

Evaluates how the heart responds to exercise, or to a medication that simulates that exertion.

Doppler

Measures the speed and direction of blood flow.

How is it performed, and how should I prepare?

You’ll lie on an exam table; electrodes are placed on your chest and conductive gel is applied. A transducer glides over your skin to capture the images. The study takes 30 minutes to an hour. No fasting is required, except for a transesophageal echocardiogram. Avoid lotions or creams on the day of the study.

No. An EKG records the heart's electrical activity; an echocardiogram uses ultrasound to see its structure and function. They're often used together.
Do I need to fast?
Generally not, except for a transesophageal echocardiogram, which requires at least 6 hours of fasting.
What can an echocardiogram detect?
Valve disease, congenital defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and blood clots, among other conditions.
